Time: August 29, 2011, 2-5 p.m.
Place: Room 212, 2 Divinity Ave.

Students who wish to take the assessment should sign up in advance with Chen Zhang (czhang@fas.harvard.edu). Please give your name, year of study, email, and whether you wish to take the first or the second year assessment.

EALC graduate students can use the test results to satisfy a language requirement.

Please note that students are allowed to use a dictionary for the second year assessment.

The Literary Chinese Assessment is for:

Students who have taken Chinese 106 at Harvard can proceed onto Chinese 107 without taking the assessment. Those who have little or no background in Literary Chinese but who have taken one year or more modern Chinese can take Chinese 106 without taking the assessment.

Other students who want to take classes in Literary Chinese  (Chinese 106: Introductory or Chinese 107: Intermediate) should take the assessment to be placed in the appropriate level.

Take the first year assessment if you have had one year of Literary Chinese at another university (or the equivalent thereof) and wish to take Chinese 107. Those who pass the first year assessment will be placed into Chinese 107.

Take the second year assessment if you have had more than one year of training in Literary Chinese. Passing it means that you have bypassed Chinese 107 and are ready to take seminars involving significant amount of reading in Literary Chinese.
